Avis lives and creates ~ sculptures, drawings and paintings, on the coast of Maine. Her work is imbued with strata of poetry, eastern mysticism, and western geometry. Art is her chosen dance with the universe.

Using an intuitive creative process, I sculpt archetypal forms, often reminiscent of other worldly beings.
Seed Pods & Botanical Hybrid Creatures
What if, plants and insects joined forces; evolving themselves into new hybrid species in order to survive? This could happen. In so doing, they would simply be employing nature’s strongest, most beautiful solution — evolutionary bio-diversity. Perched at my drawing table, I began to imagine these new seedpods, moth-orchids, and botanical-hybrids.
Mapping Migrations
Inspired by Aboriginal Dreamtime Paintings, I’ve created new maps of Dreamtime images. These Mapping - Migrations added another dimension to the Seed Pods and Botanical Hybrids. They reflect the imagined bio-diversity, which was born at my drafting table.

Sea - Portraits
I had manifested a new dream, retired (almost) from teaching art, and moved to Maine. Life was good again in my cottage by the sea. Then, in 2020 the world came to a halt with Covid. These portraits emerged during lock-down and they continue to evolve today …
